- Small Business Innovative
Research Program
- It was established under the Small Business
Innovation Development Act of 1982.
- The stated purpose of the program is "...for
domestic small business concerns to engage in research/research
and development that has the potential for commercialization".
- Ten federal agencies participate, including
DHHS, USDA, DOC, DOD, DoED, DOE, DOT, EPA, NASA, & NSF.
- To date, over $10 billion has been awarded
by SBIR to various small businesses.
- In FY 2001 along, approximately 3,800 awards
were given, totally upwards of $1.5 billion.

Eligibility:
|
- Only for-profit small businesses
can apply.
- Applying companies may have no more
than 500 employees, including affiliates.
- The company must be 51% owned and
controlled by US citizens.
- Any form of business organization
is eligible to apply.
- You can establish a formal company
after winning the award.

- You secure financing for a risky research
and development project.
- You gain the opportunity to develop a new
technology, product, or service.
- You obtian patent rights for your work.
- You get assistance with the creation of a
new project in order to remain competitive.
- You have the option of starting a new company
if you would like.
